Automatic Door Solutions for Healthcare Facilities

This depends on the room’s environmental and pressure-control requirements. Where air leakage, hygiene, differential pressure and controlled environments are critical, properly specified hermetic doors are generally more appropriate than standard sliding doors. The complete system including door leaf, seals, frame and automation must be selected according to the project requirements.

The consultant should evaluate pedestrian traffic, wheelchair and stretcher movement, hospital beds, medical equipment, available opening width and approach direction. Sensor coverage and operating parameters should then be configured for safe and efficient movement rather than using one standard specification throughout the facility. 

The required behaviour must be defined during the design stage. Depending on the door location and applicable requirements, the system may need battery backup, manual operation, emergency breakout capability, fire-alarm integration or connection with the building management and access-control systems. 

Not every isolation room automatically requires the same door specification. Where the room depends on pressure control and controlled air leakage, a properly designed sealed or hermetic door system may be appropriate. The door must be coordinated with the room's HVAC and infection-control strategy. 

The door specification depends on the ICU layout and environmental requirements. Automatic sliding doors can provide wide, unobstructed access for beds and medical equipment, while hermetic or specialized sealed doors may be required where controlled air leakage or pressure conditions are part of the room design. 

Where the clinical design requires controlled air leakage, hygiene and pressure management, hermetic automatic sliding doors are often considered. The complete system—including the door leaf, frame, seals and operator—should be coordinated with the OT's environmental requirements. 

Automatic doors can reduce the need for users to physically operate door handles. Depending on the application, activation can use presence sensors, touchless switches or other suitable controls. Door automation should complement—not replace—the healthcare facility's wider infection-control protocols. 

A zoned access-control strategy can assign permissions according to staff roles. Access-controlled automatic sliding or swing doors may be used to separate public, patient, clinical and restricted zones while supporting authorized staff movement. 

External systems should consider protected operators, appropriate sensor positioning, track cleaning, sealing and preventive maintenance. Dust accumulation is particularly important for high-cycle sliding-door systems and should be included in the facility's maintenance programme. 

The complete entrance should be coordinated with canopies, drainage, thresholds, façade detailing and appropriate components for the exposure level. Sensor positioning should also account for environmental conditions that could cause unwanted activation.
